Howard University’s College of Engineering and Architecture is expanding the pipeline into artificial intelligence and robotics through programs aimed at both students and the teachers who prepare them.
This summer, the college highlighted two initiatives: the Robotics and Automation Outreach Program, which helps K–12 educators bring robotics and automation into their classrooms, and the annual Drone Academy, which introduces local high-school students to drone technology and coding.
Howard says the educator program is part of an NSF-funded initiative and combines virtual simulation with hands-on work in the university’s robotics laboratory. The Drone Academy moved students from assembly and coding to live autonomous-flight missions.
The significance is access. Emerging technology fields can create new career and wealth opportunities, but only if students encounter the tools, vocabulary and pathways early enough to see themselves participating.
Programs like these also multiply their impact. Training one teacher can influence years of students, while hands-on programs can help young people connect abstract STEM concepts to real machines, real code and real career possibilities.
