Howard University welcomed a highly competitive incoming class as students began the 2026–27 academic year and their Bison journey.

Howard University opened its doors to a new generation of Bison this month, welcoming first-year students during the school’s annual move-in celebration.

According to Howard, the incoming class was selected from a pool of more than 36,000 applicants. The university said the class includes more than 200 students who earned a 4.0 GPA, with academic interests spanning biology, political science, nursing, health sciences and other fields.

Move-in week is a familiar college ritual, but at an HBCU it also carries the weight of lineage. New students are entering an institution whose alumni have shaped law, medicine, politics, the arts, science, journalism and public life for generations.

The larger story is what happens after arrival. Access to strong faculty, research, internships, professional networks and a campus culture that expects leadership can turn admission into long-term opportunity.

For families sending students to Howard this year, the move-in boxes represent more than dorm-room necessities. They mark the beginning of a new chapter built on the university’s enduring idea of truth and service.
